The Los Angeles region suffers from serious air pollution problems that are attributed to a multitude of sources from the daily routines of individuals, industry, and the massive transportation infrastructure, among other things.

Air pollution starts at our shores and magnifies as the air travels east through Los Angeles County toward San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Although, Santa Monica enjoys generally healthful air conditions due to its proximity to the coast, much of what air pollution the Santa Monica community generates travels east to other, less fortunate communities. Santa Monica is committed to protecting the air quality of all communities, even the global community.

Everyone can make small contributions to protect our air; from how we mow our lawn, wash our clothes or keep our hair in place – millions of decisions, small and large, impact our air quality, our economy, and our health. There is no “silver bullet” to clean air. It will take many small steps that conserve electricity, reduce gasoline consumption, and invest in clean technologies and the like. Further, many of our local sources of air pollution have global environmental implications in the cases of ozone depletion, global warming, and acid rain.
